Traipsing across plateaus in Xinjiang China, through the neighbourhoods in Gunma & Tochigi of Japan, and along the Appian Way in Rome, our old boy orchestras and choir brought the audience on a special musical journey heading to the New World, with tunes also by Haydn, Mozart, Bernstein & others along the way.

The first ever Old Boys’ Percussion Ensemble concert “Viva Drummers” was held successfully on 28 April 2018 at Sheung Wan Civic Centre.

More than 350 guests, including LSC Principal Mr. Tong and LSPS Principal Mrs. Rakesh, were excited by the rhythmic performance from 17 energetic old boys and students.

Lively music, with a showcase of Chinese and Western style drums, xylophones, cymbals or gongs, lifted everyone’s spirit in the concert hall. Audiences were indulged into the visual sensation of The Ox Fighting The Tiger and the familiar melody of Carmen Suite No. 1.

The 2-hour concert ended on a high note with all guests and performers singing the newly-arranged percussion version of our school song.

All percussion! Viva Drummers!

Our Old Boys' 5th Anniversary Concert

was held on 9 Sept 2017 (Sat) in the Academic Community Hall of HK Baptist University.  We were glad to savour the brilliant performance of Frederick Fung (class of 2010) playing Lovreglio's Clarinet Fantasy on themes from Verdi's La Traviata, and the other musical treats brought by the orchestras and choir.

Returning home, Old Boys' Concert 2016

opened to a full house at the School Hall in the evening of 17 Sept 2016, with live broadcast being streamed online to our friends who unluckily could not get a ticket.  Ip Cheng Xin's (class of 2015) rendition of Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra composed by Séjourné was one of the highlights of the night.

Old Boys' Wind Orchestra got Gold in 7th Winter Band Festival 2015

The Singapore-based Winter Band Festival Committee has come to Hong Kong again and organised the 7th Winter Band Festival 2015. This time, an "Open Division Competition" was newly established. Our Old Boys' Wind Orchestra decided to accept the challenge and join the contest.

To many us, the event helped bring back fond memories of the good old days when we were students and were practising hard for the annual interschool Music Interflows and Music Festival competitions...

The “Overall Champion” in our division was captured by Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia, who gave a convincing performance and were awarded the mark of 87.76.

As for the LSC Wind Orchestra, they participated in the "Senior Division" of the contest, sharing the stage with other secondary school bands. The team not only got the "Gold Prize" too, but was additionally crowned the "Overall Champion" title in their division.

On Nov 25, our team competed with two other local wind orchestras in Chieng Han Chow Memorial Building, Pui Ching Primary School. We are grateful that we were able to deliver a good rendition of Reed's A Jubilant Overture and Sparke's Music for a Festival.

Despite occasional slips in intonation and ensembleship, our performance was described as having “good shape contrast and contour” overall. The judges particularly complimented our flute, clarinet, bassoon and French horn players on delivering outstanding solos and soli with “lots of great emotions”. They also praised our conductor Mr Ngai for his “excellent conducting”.

Seemingly, we have presented ourselves to the audience the image of being an energetic all-man group. We were said to be able to “establish a solid groove” and one judge wrote that he “love[s] the fire the ensemble brings to the stage”. In fact, we were reminded not to “let the enthusiasm cause overblowing”! In the end, we were honoured with the “Gold Award” with a mark of 81.51, and also the line “truly a very special group” given by one of the judges.

“Lasallian Rhapsodies 喇沙狂想夜"

La Salle College Old Boys' Concert 2015

Around 1,000 audience were given a ride on the wings of music across the borders of time and civilizations to experience various wondrous fantasies during our 3rd annual concert, held on 13 Sept 2015 (Sun) at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

Our Old Boys’ Wind Orchestra started off with Van McCoy’s energetic African Symphony and Alfred Reed’s First Suite for Band, a lively and vivid collection of American dance music.  Our Old Boys’ Chinese Orchestra then took the stage and performed two idyllic fantasias, Liu Wen-jin’s Memorable Water Splashing Festival and Su Wen-ching’s The Legend of the Wind Lion God.

What came next was the phenomenal performance by our first Old Boys A cappella Group ever in the school’s history.  They began with Frederic Weatherly’s Danny Boy, a well-known tune dedicated to the generations of the Irish Brothers who devoted their lives to educating Lasallians in Hong Kong.  As encore, they sang a Canto-pop Under A Vast Sky (海闊天空) composed by Wong Ka Kui, pushing the atmosphere to a climax.

After the intermission, our Old Boys’ Symphony Orchestra performed together with our guest performer, St. Stephen’s Girls’ College Alumnae Orchestra.  The joint orchestra started with Franz von Suppé’s Poet and Peasant Overture and then Henryk Wieniawski’s affectionate and very demanding Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor (Movts II & III).  Our soloist, John Sit (08), gave a breathtaking rendition and it was literally a singing violin!  Last but not least, Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14 (Movts IV & V) brought everyone to the surreal journey, witnessing the artist’s march to his own scaffold and the dream about witches’ Sabbath. Finally, the concert came to a full stop with the song that the old boys always sing when getting together, under a new arrangement by Jacky Yung (13).

May all future concerts not only promote the goodwill of La Salle music but also continue to be the “sharing of thoughts” or even “nectar of soul” for all Lasallians and friends of La Salle!

Photos of the evening, together with the audio and video recordings of the performances can now be found in Gallery!

“Soundscape of Folk Cultures

La Salle College Old Boys' Concert 2014

民俗音樂綺想”

The 2nd annual old boys concert was smoothly held in Tsuen Wan Town Hall on

31st August, 2014, with more than 400 guests attending the event.

The old boy wind orchestra first kick-offed the concert with two pieces of lively Spanish and Mexican dance music. The old boy Chinese Orchestra then followed and performed 4 pieces of Chinese music, including a concerto for two Suonas, and the famous local tune “Below the Lion Rock” as a dedication to the memory of our old boy Mr James Wong (黃霑) (class of 1958), who passed away 10 years ago. The old boy Percussion Ensemble then took the stage and performed an exciting Japanese piece about “snow lanterns” and “white tiger”, a mystic creature in their folk culture. Finally we had the old boy symphony orchestra wrapping up the night by Dvorak's bucolic and idyllic Symphony no.8 and the school song.

The Music Board, LSCOBA would like to extend our gratitude to all the old boy and student players, the two conductors Mr Kelvin Ngai Lung Shing and Mr Ng Chiu Shing, helpers, guests, and sponsors for their invaluable contribution and support.

Photos and videos of the concert can now be found in our Gallery. Enjoy!
